Day two of major rail service changes is underway in New Jersey as crews continue transferring traffic from the century‑old Portal Bridge to the new Portal North Bridge.
The biggest test arrives Tuesday, when full weekday commuter volume returns after the holiday. Hoboken Station remained quieter Monday because of the holiday and NJ Transit's enhanced weekend schedule.
Trains are running on a single track between New York and Secaucus, affecting nearly every rail line except the Atlantic City line. Riders on the Morristown line, Gladstone Branch and Montclair‑Boonton lines who normally travel directly into New York will be rerouted to Hoboken for most of the project.
The impact was already felt over the weekend, with 27 NJ Transit trains reporting cancellations as the first phase of the cutover began. NJ Transit apologized for the inconvenience and urged riders to check schedules before traveling.
Some riders said they understand the short‑term delays if they lead to more reliable service in the future.NJ Transit says tickets will be crossed on PATH and New York Waterway ferries, and additional buses will run along the 126 route to Port Authority.
Riders who can work from home are encouraged to do so. Those who must commute are being advised to monitor alerts and allow extra time.
The cutover work is scheduled to continue through March 14, with regular schedules expected to resume the following day after safety testing.
