Cramped and crowded conditions on rush hour NJ Transit trains may soon be a thing of the past with new double-decker trains.
A ceremonial ribbon cutting in Trenton Monday marked the beginning of double-decker NJ Transit travel. According to NJ Transit officials, the cars will provide 20 percent more capacity than current train cars. So far, nine double-decker cars are available. Another 225 will be added in the next two years.
The Port Authority and federal government are picking up the $460 million tab for the cars. The double-deckers will start on the Northeast Corridor. As more cars are added, double-deckers will be placed on the North Jersey Coast Line and then the Midtown Direct Service.
