A 20-year-old man convicted of killing a Lakewood police officer has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Jahmell Crockam appeared before a judge in Ocean County this morning.
Crockam was convicted of murdering Lakewood Patrolman Christopher Matlosz for shooting the officer execution-style in broad daylight last year. In January of 2011, Crockam walked up to the officer's police cruiser and shot him three times at point-blank range.
A witness in his trial testified Crockam, who had outstanding arrest warrants, vowed he would sooner kill a police officer before he would allow himself to be arrested.
"Today's sentence, while appropriate under current law, does not fit the crime," New Jersey State PBA President Anthony Wieners said in a news release today. "There is no place in this world for someone who would walk up to a police officer in broad daylight and execute him. This convict has used his 20 years on this planet to cause misery and harm to others and he doesn't deserve one more minute here."
