Governor George Pataki (R-NY) proposed a $110 billion budget plan for 2006 Tuesday, however, some critics say the plan shortchanges Bronx and city schools.
Pataki?s budget proposal sets aside $17 billion for Bronx and New York State schools. Some city officials and education groups say that plan doesn?t follow a court order that calls for the state to give city schools more than $5 billion over four years.
Also included in Pataki?s proposal is a $500 tax credit to parents in districts with struggling schools. The credit would be used for tutoring, after school programs or private school tuition. Critics say that credit would hurt the public school system.
