A husband and wife from Whiting are grateful to be alive after a fire tore through Ocean Beach Marina in Lacey Township this morning.
The fire destroyed five boats and damaged two others. Lisa and George Goins were asleep on their boat about one hundred feet away from the blaze.
Lisa Goins says she awoke to a flickering light in their window. She says, "If I didn't wake up, this whole marina would have went up." Her husband says the two were "definitely, definitely very lucky."
"Good thing she's a light sleeper," he added.
The couple says the situation got especially hairy when Lisa's cell phone couldn't get a signal to call 911. The two started pounding on neighbor's doors to get help. Finally, one neighbor answered and eventually got a cell signal.
Firefighters from several communities worked to battle the blaze as the flames jumped from boat to boat, fueled by an east wind.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the cause. No injuries were reported.
