Gov. Jon Corzine joined a group of protesters at a rally in Montclair Monday calling on China to stop supplying Sudan with weapons used in the escalating war in Darfur.
Organizers of the rally say that China is a known weapons supplier to Sudan and they maintain that the Chinese government can help end the genocide in Darfur by cutting off that supply. More than 200,000 people have been killed in Darfur, and millions more are displaced.
With China preparing to host the summer Olympics, protesters believe now is the perfect time for the world to pressure the Chinese government to end its relationship with Sudan. Demonstrators carried a replica torch to help make that point.
"It's very symbolic of what the Olympics is about, and that's peace and harmony and putting politics aside so that athletes can compete together," says Doug Lennox, an Olympic athlete.
Rallies and marches are being held nationwide to protest China's involvement in the Darfur crisis.
