Hundreds of New Jersey communities will get a chunk of $78 million the state is dispersing to help repair roads in a New Deal-type move by Gov. Jon Corzine.

The governor's administration believes the road projects will help stimulate the economy by creating nearly 800 construction jobs. Since March of this year, New Jersey has lost 1,200 construction jobs.

"This is a piece of it," says Corzine. "We want to accelerate these projects and we'll be beating the drum with the help of a second stimulus package out of Washington."

The funds for the grants are coming out of the transportation trust fund, not the state's general budget. Corzine says it doesn't make sense to cut spending on projects of this sort because of the potential to create employment.

Towns in all 21 counties received grants. Bergen County got the biggest slice of the pie, receiving more than $6.7 million.
