Police officers in Wayne have arrested and charged a Morris County woman after she allegedly called 911 in an effort to distract police officers.
Hayley Oates, 25, of Lake Hiawatha, was charged with filing a false report. Police say early Monday morning, Oats called 911 to report that a woman was being attacked by a man.
When officers arrived at the scene, no such crime was taking place.
Oates and an unidentified man were supposedly drinking at a bar and were intoxicated. Police say Oates made the fake call so that they could leave the bar without getting caught for driving under the influence.
Wayne Police Capt. Laurence Martin says that Oates may have even gotten away with it, if not for a mistake. When she got home, Oates supposedly posted about her caper on social media.
"Lmao...2 min later the cop peals (sic) out...silly piggies tricks r for u," she allegedly wrote. Someone read her message and tipped off police.
Capt. Martin says his department takes false reports very seriously.
"It is dangerous. In 1993 a Paramus police officer was killed responding to a false alarm of a shooting that was taking place at the Garden State Mall," He says. "It was a false report. He died en route. So it's a very serious offense."
Oates now faces fines and up to a year in jail if convicted.
