Gov. Phil Murphy has announced his intention to nominate a new state health commissioner.
The governor said he will nominate Dr. Kaitlan Baston for the position. She is currently the division head of addiction medicine and medical director for the Center of Healing at Cooper University Health Care. She is the founder of the center, according to a press release issued by Murphy’s office.
“Dr. Baston’s breadth of experience as a physician, highlighted by her many leadership roles within the addiction and health care space, will make her an exceptional Commissioner at the Department of Health,” the governor wrote in a statement.
The news comes as current Commissioner Judith Persichilli announced her retirement.
“Dr. Baston is eminently qualified to carry on the Department’s critical work in tackling New Jersey’s public health crises and fulfilling its mission,” Persichilli wrote in a statement.
Baston will assume the role in August.
