Contaminated soil has been removed from a northern New Jersey property after it was dumped there when a freight train derailed over the weekend.

Norfolk Southern spokesman Dave Pidgeon tells NJ.com that four cubic yards of soil was removed by Sunday afternoon and service on the rail line has been restored. The soil was contaminated with stabilized lead.

He says the rail company is in the process of hiring a contractor to test asphalt to ensure there aren't any lingering health risks. He says there doesn't appear to be any contamination to the water or air. The state Department of Environmental Protection has been notified.

The company is investigating what caused the derailment on Saturday in Nutley.

No injuries were reported.
