A third school in Bergen County has contaminated soil on its property.
Fair Lawn School District officials are working to clean up contaminated soil at Lyncrest Elementary School. District representatives say the tainted soil was brought in by a contractor in charge of creating a grassy field over an unsafe playground.
District officials say they initially ordered the soil removed months ago because they were dissatisfied with the quality. When the soil was tested, officials say three petroleum-based compounds and traces of the pesticide Aldrin were found in levels slightly above NJDEP?s residential soil cleanup criteria.
The district plans to have the soil removed and the field completed by the start of the school year. There will be a Board of Education meeting August 27 to address concerns.
Meanwhile, the contaminated soil at West Brook Middle School was finally cleaned up in July. The contamination, brought to the public?s attention at the end of May, forced students to finish up the school year at Bergen Community College.
The area of Memorial School with contaminated soil was also cleaned up at the end of June.
