Construction to raise the Bayonne Bridge is on track to be complete by the end of 2017, according to Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officials.
The work is being done to allow larger container ships to travel under the bridge. The Neo-Panamax ships are the largest ships in the world.
The new bridge deck that motorists will drive on is being built above the current span. The last girder for the new deck was put into place Thursday night.
"That will essentially make the connection between Bayonne and Staten Island," says the Port Authority's Steven Plate.
Construction on the bridge began three years ago. The project will cost $1.3 billion.
