Community honors dog with cancer who was completing a bucket list
Thousands of fans of a New Jersey dog suffering from cancer are in mourning after reports that the dog finally succumbed to his illness.
St. Bernard Odin became famous after his owners vowed to make his last few months memorable by completing “Odin’s Bucket List.” A Facebook page chronicling the adventure amassed 7,000 followers.
Owner Bobbi Jo Ledford announced Tuesday that Odin’s tumor had gotten worse and she decided to have him put down.
"I just had a hard time looking at his paw being so swollen and it reminded me that he could be in pain,” Ledford said. "When I left his side he started to howl. So he wanted me to be with him all the time and I knew that was going to be difficult."
Odin was able to check off 51 items on the bucket list, including multiple trips for ice cream, rides in police cars, a trip to the Staten Island Yankees game, hikes in High Point and even a trip to Hooters.
Odin was supposed to watch a group of skydivers jump in his honor Tuesday, but he died before he could see it. The skydivers still jumped Tuesday evening. The event took place at Sussex Airport.
Ledford’s husband Jeff says that the bucket list has helped them cope and prepare for Odin’s death.
"We've shared experiences for years but with Odin it made us open our eyes a bit more and see love is more important than anything,” says Jeff.
The Ledfords say that they eventually plan to adopt another dog – preferably another St. Bernard.
