Acting Governor Richard Codey met with college and university presidents Friday to discuss and implement increased campus security.
The topic has taken on a new sense of urgency in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shootings. Codey wants all schools in the state to be better prepared for student notification in the event of a crisis on campus.
Codey acknowledges violence may not be preventable, but he has suggestions for colleges to better security.
?We will ask them all to have campus lockdown procedures, we will ask them all to have active shooter patrols,? said Codey.
State Homeland Security Director Dick Canas said, ?The universities and colleges of New Jersey have procedures in place. We?d like to see if there are any gaps, if there?s any place the state can inject itself.?
Codey is setting up a task force to come up with recommendations for colleges. He would like the work completed by June so all updated security measures can be put in place by the fall.
