Civil unions for same-sex couples are just one step away from turning into a reality in New Jersey.
The state Assembly passed the bill by a vote of 56 to 19 Thursday. The state Senate also passed the bill 22 to 12. Before the vote, both sides of the issue gave last-minute testimonies. Gay rights advocates cheered the eventual decision, but say they still plan to push for full marriage rights in the near future.
The legislation would extend to gay couples all the rights and privileges available under state law to married people. Democratic Governor Jon Corzine has said he will sign the measure into law if passed by both the Assembly and Senate.
