Caught on camera: Vehicle jumps curb, crashes in Jersey City
Surveillance video captured a wild ride as an alleged drunk driver jumped a curb and sped down a sidewalk in Jersey City.
It happened on Saturday around 7:30 p.m. Video shows a Ford Taurus speeding by Karina's Restaurant at Linden and Ocean avenues. Another angle shows a man sitting in front of the restaurant, who avoided getting hit by mere feet.
The vehicle then crosses the intersection before crashing to a stop.
No pedestrians were hurt.
Alberto Paez, the owner of Al's Refrigeration, had closed up shop and was walking to his car only minutes before.
"Fourteen minutes later, it happened. We were lucky, thank God for that," says Paez.
Paez's son knows the man shown in the video who regularly sits outside the restaurant.
"He barely made it I would say by a couple of feet. Maybe three or four feet, but he would've been plastered all over the restaurant," says Neftali Paez.
The driver was identified by police as John Wilson. In all, he took out to traffic lights, stop signs, a bus stand and hit several cars.
Wilson was charged with driving while intoxicated and not having valid insurance. He did not suffer any severe injuries.
