A car was destroyed in an early morning explosion in a residential area of Totowa Monday.
The incident happened just after 5:30 a.m. on Congressional Lane. The vehicle, which appears to be a black Audi, was parked in front of a home at the time.
According to scanner transmissions from Broadcastify, dispatchers told first responders that a person contacted them to report the explosion.
“There’s a caller on the line who says a car blew up. The caller says there’s no fire damage or anything,” a dispatcher was heard saying on scanners.
Arriving units indicated that a hazardous gas may have ignited when the vehicle was started.
“We have one injury, one car exploded. Possibly acetylene. Plumber started the car and it ignited,” first responders could be heard saying on scanner transmissions.
A resident who lives near the scene told News 12 he and his wife heard the explosion, which caused damage to his home. The severity of the blast caused items to fly off shelves inside his home and blew out his door and windows.
"Our house is the corner house and the car exploded right in front of our house," Sheldon Blaine said. "About 5:30 in the morning we heard a loud bang. We looked outside, we saw an exploded car. We ran downstairs we saw glass, the explosion blew in our door and blew in the windows."
Blaine told News 12 the wife of the victim who was in the car went inside the house and was injured. Blaine says his family then called 911.
Police and fire officials have the area around the scene taped off. Additional crews were also en route to investigate.
This is a developing story.
