Video out of an East Brunswick car wash Sunday afternoon shows a vehicle drive off the road and into a neighboring apartment building.
“All I heard was ‘bam!’” said Team Car Wash employee Rob W. “Just a loud crash, me and my boss come running over.”
Surveillance video from Team Car Wash on Tices Lane shows a black SUV change directions when exiting the track, appearing to shift into reverse. Then, the car accelerates forward into the neighboring Kensington Place apartment building.
The family who lives at the unit was out of town. Those in the car suffered injuries that are not life-threatening.
The building’s maintenance director said the building is structurally sound. There was no timeline on repairs as of Sunday night.
“I’m happy they’re OK because the car looked really, really bad,” said Team Car Wash saleswoman Apryl Coffman. “It was totaled beyond repair.”
Maintenance says they’re in contact with the city and building department. Engineers verified there’s no other damage than to the one wall. The complex has 400 units.
“I’ve been to this car wash numerous times,” resident Brandon Rosenthal said. “I walk my dog over here, I’ve never seen anything happen like this.”
Employees say it’s a reminder to carefully follow instructions.
“You’re supposed to wait until the light turns green and slowly pull forward,” said one car wash employee. “In this case, that didn’t happen.”
