Can you unplug? French law makes it illegal to require employees to check email after hours
How long can you go without checking your emails?
A law passed in France makes it illegal for employers to require their employees to keep track of their work emails after hours.
But with America’s fast-paced work ethic, is this something that American workers would want to see done?
“A vast majority of technology leaders believe that not only is this something that they could adhere to, but that their employees would follow suit,” says Christina Giglio, regional manager at Robert Half Technology.
A new survey found that higher-ups believe that around 65 percent of employees would follow a ban on checking and sending work emails after hours. But more than 50 percent of workers said that they would still be tempted to check in when they weren’t at work.
“Management sets the tone,” says Giglio. “Employers need to negotiate this upfront as to what is expected from their employees.”
But Giglio admits that as technology continues to advance and creep into personal and professional life, it is harder for people to stay disconnected.
