A stretch of Millstone River Road in Hillsborough is closed this morning after downed power lines sparked a natural gas fire.

Flames are still burning intensely near Franklin Drive. A resident said the wires have been on fire since about 10 p.m. Tuesday, after the power went out and briefly returned around midnight. The resident said the wires were still burning hours later.

No fire crews are at the location during the morning hours, while police are blocking the road to drivers and pedestrians. It remains unclear why fire officials are not on scene.

The area is within JCP&L territory, and the power company has been contacted for information. Officials are working to determine what caused the lines to fall and why they continue burning.
