Leaders in Brooklyn gathered in Bushwick to canvas the community and provide some tips on how to avoid dangerous situations in the wake of recent antisemitic attacks.
The community canvas was organized by councilmembers Lincoln Restler and Chi Osse, along with a group called Jews for Racial and Economic Justice.
"We've seen a sustained increase in acts of violence against the Jewish community," says Restler.
The goal was to equip people with tips and tricks that they can use to prevent violence, safely intervene if someone is being harassed and make people feel safer.
Police are investigating incidents involving Jewish people randomly getting punched in the head and an 8-year-old who was spit on.
"We can't enforce our way out of hate violence," says Restler. "We need to build and strengthen tolerance and our cross cultural understanding of the diverse communities that comprise Brooklyn neighborhoods."
There have also been recents incidents where swastikas were scrawled around the city. Police released video of the suspects they're searching for in connection to two swastikas found in Brooklyn.
