Brooklyn residents gathered Sunday to celebrate World Refugee Day, a day designated by the United Nations to honor refugees around the globe.

The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music celebrated the day with their 6th Annual World Refugee Day Music Festival. Organizers with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and Catholic Charities Community Services said their hope for the festival was to celebrate the work of organizations that resettle and support refugees from all over the world.

Artists who are immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees themselves from countries like Tobago, Colombia and Afghanistan took the stage.

Organizers and elected officials said the festival was all in an effort to highlight the resiliency and plight of millions of people who continue to search for safety and shelter in foreign lands.

The festival kicked off six years ago as a response to the 2017 executive order that sought to ban travel into the United States from seven predominantly Muslim countries. Those part of the festival said they hope for next year's festival gets even better and bigger.
