Tuesday was a day unlike any other for Newark students.
An afternoon visit from Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, marked Newark Public Schools' first encounter with a member of the British royal family. His Royal Highness stopped by to promote the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, which was founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, and to recognize participating students.
“I’m incredibly blessed to have been a part of this program, and I’m very happy that he’s coming here because it’s not often that you’ll ever experience something like a member of the royal family coming to your school," said Chonn Hinton, a participating junior student.
The program is recognized as the world's leading youth achievement award for those aged 14 to 24. Students, like Chonn, can achieve three levels - bronze, silver or gold - through investing time in different sections of activities, like “adventurous journey” or “voluntary service.”
"What you gained here is the award is recognized in many countries around the world, and by many universities and colleges," said Prince Edward.
“That program does offer an opportunity for our students to really exemplify their skills, leadership, service and giving back to the community," said Dr. Maria Ortiz, Newark Public Schools assistant superintendent. "I think that what has started as a legacy back in another country, and now is in over 140 countries around the world, to have Newark as part of that, it’s really outstanding.”
Ortiz gets much of the credit for bringing the program to various schools with more to come.
“From that, we have over 400 students who are part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award USA that are really committed to making that change," Ortiz said.
Chonn said the hours she invested helped her to discover her potential.
"I feel that I'm more open to trying new things," she said. "I do have some fears, so just being away from my parents, I've never been away from my parents before that. It was a great experience."
Prince Edward will next make his way to Philadelphia on Wednesday.
