As summer begins, New Jersey residents will need to be more considerate about smoking on state beaches since a ban making it illegal went into effect early this year.
Anyone caught with a lit cigarette or vaping on state-owned properties like parks, historic sites and beaches could pay a fine.
Fines start at $250 for the first offense and can go up to $1,000 if someone is caught three times.
Some beachgoers News 12 spoke with said they support the ban.
Towns are allowed to set up specific smoking areas on no more than 15% of the beach.
