? Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy formally announced their support for Democratic presidential hopeful Barrack Obama Monday.
The announcement took place at Teterboro Airport as Senator Obama began a day of campaign events in the Garden State. Booker and Healy, mayors of New Jersey?s two largest cities, say they?re backing Obama due to his standing on urban issues, specifically housing.
Obama took the opportunity to announce a housing trust fund that would provide cities with resources to house the poorest residents.
The senator was also asked if he?s worried about a battle with Senator Hillary Clinton over African-American votes in New Jersey.
?I think the African-American voters are sophisticated and will look at the candidates as any other group would, to see who stands with them on the issues,? Obama said. ?And that?s as it should be.?
Later in the day, during his stop in Trenton, Obama took questions from union workers and their families. Obama addressed his reasoning behind supporting unions, their right of unions to organize and the right for all to have affordable health care.
?There?s no reason why when we spend $2 billon on health care, we can?t make sure everyone has health care. We can have universal health care by the end of the next president?s first term ? by my term,? Obama said.
Obama also said he wants to pass an Employee Free Choice Act to stop stall tactics by companies. He said if a majority of workers want to unionize, they should be able to do so.
