Thousands of people in Hoboken are being told to boil their water after two water main breaks shut down streets and disrupted service.

The first break happened Tuesday morning at Newark and Garden Streets, causing a major drop in water pressure. A second break occurred later that day on 9th Street between Garden and Bloomfield. Repairs are still underway near Newark Street, while the Ninth Street break has been fixed.

Newark Street remains closed between Washington Street and Park Avenue, and Garden Street is closed from First Street to Observer Highway. Residents are asked to avoid the area.

A system-wide boil water advisory is in effect until water testing by the NJDEP confirms it's safe. Veolia has collected samples, and results are pending.

The water distribution sites will be open from 7 a.m. at three water distribution sites at the following locations.

  • Monroe Gardens, 221 Jackson Street

  • Multi Service Center, 400 First Street

  • Fox Hill Gardens, 311 13th Street
