The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General has released police body camera video from a fatal police-involved shooting in Jersey City last year.

The shooting happened on Oct. 21. Teshawn Rogers, 27, was shot and killed during the encounter.

Officials say that Rogers was walking in the area of Bergen and Virginia avenues around 1 a.m. when he encountered a unit of “plainclothes officers” in an unmarked police car. They say when the unmarked car pulled to the side of the road ahead of Rogers, he “immediately discharged a firearm and ran southbound.”

Officials say another police vehicle pulled up as Rogers ran away. They say this is when Officer Lance Jackson got out of the vehicle and shot Rogers. Surveillance videos from homes nearby appear to show a gun fly out of Rogers’s hands and land on a front patio. Officials say a gun was recovered at the scene.

Medical aid was called in for Rogers, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital around 1:45 a.m.

No officers were hurt in the incident.

Since October, Jersey City has called on the state Attorney General’s Office to release the footage. Rogers’ family had access before the public release.
