A bill working its way through the New Jersey Legislature would eliminate the statute of limitations on civil prosecutions of child sex abuse cases.
Currently civil action must be filed within two years after a victim turns 18.
Sex abuse survivors gathered outside the New Jersey State House Monday for a rally in support of the bill.
“There’s been cases where an individual could put their predator in jail yet not have any recourse for the damage or harm that was done to them because of our very archaic statute of limitations for child sexual abuse and it needs to change,” says Mark Crawford, the director of the New Jersey chapter of the Survivors Network.
The bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee for discussion.
There is no statute of limitations on criminal case for child sex abuse.
