(05/02/08) TEANECK ? Elevated levels of benzene were discovered in some classrooms at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Teaneck, but the school remained open Friday.
State officials told the school the levels were so low that not only could the school remain open, but the classrooms could be used as well. However, school administrators decided to be extra cautious and close the affected classrooms Friday while keeping the school open.
Parents received a recorded message from the principal Thursday about the Benzene discovery. School officials say they?ll open the classrooms once they are totally benzene free.
There doesn?t appear to be a connection between the benzene in the classrooms and a fuel spill that took place on school grounds in 1989.
