It’s the end of an era for Bischoff’s in Teaneck. The beloved ice cream shop will close its doors for good on Sept. 3.
The 89-year-old shop reopened in May as a summer pop-up. The shop hoped to raise enough money to stay open for good.
A message was posted on Bischoff’s Instagram page that said “We can’t begin to express how painful this decision is for us. Five generations of our family have treasured our role in the community.”
The post continued, “Bischoff’s has been everything to us. YOU have been everything to us – every kid who first tased ice cream in our shop, every couple on a first day, everyone who came here for a celebration, or because they needed something sweet at a painful time.”
Customers say it's a loss for the community and that the shop was more than just a place to get ice cream.
One customer, Valeri Katz, said she first visited Bischoff's 20 years ago and has been coming back ever since.
"You can go in the back and have lunch too,” Katz said.” So, then I started coming here with my father and as I said, we made friends. He was a World War II vet. He met another World War II vet."
