The Belleville School District will remain closed on Wednesday as the town continues to deal with the aftermath of a major warehouse fire that sparked over the weekend.

Schools have been closed since Monday, ever since a fire sparked inside a mattress warehouse on Sunday.

“We understand the concerns and challenges this presents for our families and are working around the clock with local officials to ensure a safe return to school,” school officials wrote in a statement.

Fire crews are still putting out hot spots. The town’s mayor says that there is still a way to go before the fire is completely extinguished.

The mayor says that it is possible that welding may have sparked the fire.

Demolition crews are on scene to tear down what is left of the building.

Several nearby residents remain displaced and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross while the town provides a temporary shelter.

Donations, food and supplies from the community have been coming in for the crews that have been at the site since Sunday.
