Take a quick glance at PSE&G's Orange Heights Switching Station and you may mistake the space for something else.
"We went from being uneasy about what the construction would look like all the way to now people asking me can they have units in what looks like an apartment," said Orange Township Mayor Dwayne D. Warren.
This current energy infrastructure has been operating since 2024, but Thursday marked a new chapter for its exterior.
City officials, community members and PSE&G made their way to the area of South Jefferson Street and Forest Street for the unveiling of a mural for the space.
Artist Tom Nussbaum is behind the mural.
"Being here with the upgrade is nice enough, but then to have a facade that makes it attractive to our community, which is a double dose of bonus," said Mayor Warren.
"This is a community that has some special interest in arts, and so the Orange arts community also took a special interest in this project," said Rick Thigpen, PSE&G senior vice president for Corporate Citizenship.
The art mirrors an ongoing link, as PSE&G points out, much like distribution systems.
The mural and the Orange Heights station now create a twofold benefit: aesthetically pleasing art to complement the streetscape, while better serving the community.
The Orange Heights station can withstand more severe weather, which also increases its reliability standards, so people don't face extended outages.
