A Barnegat man has been indicted and arrested in connection to the murder of a Sayreville teen 22 years ago.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office says that 49-year-old Bruce Cymanski faces several charges, including first-degree murder, sexual assault and kidnapping.
The case stems from the 1999 disappearance of high school senior Nancy Noga. The 17-year-old was reported missing on Jan. 7, 1999, after she did not come home after work. Her body was found in a wooded area five days later. An autopsy found that she died from blunt force trauma.
The case remained open for 20 years while detectives investigated Noga’s death and disappearance.
Officials say that Cymanski was identified as the suspect by using genetic genealogy.
“In the decades since Nancy Noga’s death, law enforcement has relentlessly pursued justice on her behalf. The advancement of modern scientific tools has allowed that endeavor to enter a new chapter,” prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said in a statement.
A grand jury indicted Cymanski and he was arrested near his home following a brief foot pursuit. He is now being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center pending a court date.
