A husband and wife who have been charged in a case of child abuse in Gloucester Township were in court Thursday.
A judge in Camden County ruled that Branndon Mosley and Brenda Spencer will stay in jail until their trial.
Both are accused of abuse, including holding their daughter captive since 2018, chaining her to a dog crate and not allowing her to go to school.
The victim is now 18 years old.
During a detention hearing, Judge Gwendolyn Blue said that what these two parents are accused of is “barbaric" and "dangerous.”
She described what Mosley and Spencer put this young girl through as “acts of torture.”
Camden County prosecutor Grace MacAulay was pleased.
“What our victim has suffered, physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, is nothing short of domestic torture,” said MacAulay.
The prosecution called both suspects a flight risk.
In court, the prosecution revealed that Mosley confessed to police that he locked the girl in a dog crate and handcuffed her inside of a bathroom for a year.
He also confessed that his stepdaughter was later confined to a room without a bed or toilet.
The prosecution said the only time she was allowed to leave the room was to clean up after the dogs and chinchillas in the house.
Mosley is also accused of sexually assaulting the girl starting at age seven and periodically shaving off all the hair on her head.
“It’s his turn to be confined now," said assistant prosecutor Kelly Testa told the judge. “This man was anything but kind to this child.”
However, his attorney suggested the victim may be exaggerating, especially concerning the sexual assault allegations.
“I wholeheartedly believe they were untrue,” said defense attorney Megan Helfrich.
She also said that no chains were found in the house.
The victim’s mother, Brenda Spencer, told police she pulled her daughter from school after the sixth grade to be home-schooled, but the victim says that home schooling lasted a week.
The victim said her mom told her she needed to stay in the dog crate because the girl stole food.
The victim told police that she never said anything of the abuse until now because she feared her younger sister would go to an orphanage.
Brenda Spencer is not allowed to have any contact with her daughter.
Both defendants will be back in court for a hearing in July.
If convicted on these charges, both could face life in prison.
