Officials in Morris County say that a woman and an 11-year-old boy have been found dead in a pond in Boonton Township.
Authorities say that a passerby called police around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday to report a young child shouting for his mother at Grace Lord Park. They say that police officers found the boy and saw footprints leading down into the water.
Authorities say that the officers then found two bodies – a woman in her 30s and an 11-year-old boy at the top of a waterfall. They were pronounced dead a little after 6:30 p.m., according to officials.
"Obviously a very sad day when children are involved in this type of. Horrible situation and our condolences to the family. We will need time to get to the bottom of all this and we will keep you advised," says Acting Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll.
It was not immediately clear how the woman and child ended up in the water. The boy who was originally found is now safe, according to police.
The names of the victims were not released. The incident remains under investigation.
