A 17-year-old is facing charges related to a police chase that started in Mahwah and ended miles away in Ridgewood.
Mahwah police say that the Newark teen stole the black Maserati in Franklin Lakes. Police began tracking the stolen car around 6 a.m. Wednesday. Police say that the chase began when the teen got to Darlington Avenue and tried to ram into a police cruiser that swerved out of the way.
Police say that the teen then traveled south in Campgaw and tried to escape on Route 17. The car eventually became disabled due to a mechanical issue on Route 17 in Ridgewood.
Edwin Ortiz, who works at a nearby gas station, says that he and some customers witnessed some of the action.
"We really didn't know what was going on. We saw there was a car on the side of the curb,” he says. “We just saw there was a bunch of police cars coming from different towns."
It appears that the teen tried to run away after the car stopped working, but police eventually caught up to him and placed him under arrest.
The teen was not named due to his age. He faces several charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer.
