Authorities say an Ohio State
University student from Mahwah was killed over the weekend in an early morning
shooting near campus.
The university’s public safety department said
Columbus police were dispatched Sunday shortly after 2 a.m. to a reported
shooting in an alley, and found a man with a gunshot wound. The man was pronounced
dead at the scene.
Authorities identified the victim as Ohio State
student Chase Meola, 23, a fifth-year marketing major from Mahwah.
Officials say reports indicated that some
people were asked to leave a house party in the area and an altercation
occurred outside.
No other injuries were reported in
the shooting.
The man charged in the shooting death
is due to make his initial court appearance Tuesday.
Eighteen-year-old Kintie Mitchell
Jr., of Columbus, Ohio, is charged with murder in the death of Meola.
It wasn’t clear if he was involved in the altercation that led to the
shooting. It wasn’t known
Monday if Mitchell has retained an attorney.
