A New Jersey man who went missing while geocaching in Louisiana has been found dead, according to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Robert Owens Jr., 58, was reported missing on Monday near Messina Road in Rapides Parish while geocaching – an activity where participants use a GPS receiver or mobile device to hide and locate containers called “geocaches” or “caches” at specifical locations marked by coordinates all over the world.
Officials were able to find Owens’s car, but not him.
After an extensive search of the area, authorities were able to find Owens’s body around 9 a.m. Tuesday in a densely wooded area about half a mile from the trailhead on Messina Road.
“Due to the severe decomposition of the remains, positive identification is pending. However, from clothing description and other physical characteristics, Sheriff’s Detectives believe this is Mr. Owens,” officials wrote on Facebook.
Owens was a resident of Millville.
