Authorities have arrested a man accused of killing another man inside a Keyport apartment complex Thursday.
John Curtin, 19, is charged in the murder of 20-year-old Evan Smutz at the Holmdel Point Apartments on Center Street.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office says that Curtin came to Smutz’s apartment and an argument ensued. Curtin then allegedly shot Smutz and ran away. Responding officers found Smutz suffering from gunshot wounds inside the apartment. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
Officials say that Curtin surrendered to the New York City Police Department several hours after the shooting. He was taken into custody by Monmouth County authorities.
Curtin was charged with armed robbery, murder and weapons offenses at a court hearing Thursday afternoon. A formal detention hearing is set for Aug. 15.
Smutz was a noted athlete who played baseball for Keyport High School and was on the Monmouth Squad in the 2016 All-Shore Gridiron Classic, a summer all-star football game.
