Grief counselors were at two schools in Newark Monday after the deaths of two students last week.
A first-grader at the Oliver Street School died Thursday after experiencing flu-like symptoms, according to the district. District officials say the little girl died after being out of school for 10 days.
The district says it is working closely with the Newark Department of Health to investigate the student's death.
"We cleaned the classroom over the weekend," says Newark School District spokesperson Brittany Parmley. "We are here today on hand to answer any questions that parents may have and that staff may have."
In a separate letter, school officials at Luis Munoz Marin Middle School told parents that a seventh-grader died on Wednesday. Authorities are investigating that child's death.
The identities of the two students have not been released.
