Authorities have released the name of a toddler who was killed when a mail truck struck her grandmother, who was carrying the child across a street in Elizabeth.
City officials say 2-year-old Sofia Flores died in Monday morning's accident, while her 4-year-old brother and their grandmother were hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.
Witnesses say the impact sent the girl into the air. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
The grandmother, 55-year-old Anna Chacon, underwent surgery and was in critical but stable condition Tuesday. Details on the boy's condition have not been disclosed.
No charges have been filed so far, and the crash remains under investigation. The driver of the mail truck remained at the scene and was not injured.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service says the agency is investigating the incident and will cooperate fully with police.
