Authorities in Hudson County say that a fire that killed a married couple early Friday morning seems to have originated in the couple’s kitchen.

The fire started just before 2 a.m. at the apartment complex located at 3 Islandview Court in Bayonne. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office says that 75-year-old Balbina Macchio and 65-year-old John Macchio were found unresponsive inside their unit. They were taken to the Bayonne Medical Center for treatment but died.

The prosecutor says that it is believed that the fire started in the Macchios’ kitchen. But the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

All 12 units inside the building were affected by the fire. Officials say that 32 people, including four children, were displaced.

No other injuries were reported.
