Authorities say a New Jersey doctor and seven other people have been accused of operating a drug ring that illegally distributed thousands of oxycodone pills.

State Attorney General Christopher Porrino announced Tuesday that Dr. George Beecher was indicted on charges including strict liability for drug-induced death related to the overdose death of the son of one of the other ring members.

Investigators say Beecher, a Warren-based ear, nose and throat specialist, wrote hundreds of bogus prescriptions in the names of more than two dozen people, supplying the ring with more than $1 million worth of pills.

The 75-year-old is accused of writing a number of oxycodone and Xanax prescriptions for a 30-year-old man who died from an overdose in 2013.

Beecher's attorney couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
