An Essex County sheriff's office detective shot and killed a bank robbery suspect Thursday who authorities said was armed with a handgun.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office said there was a report of a robbery Thursday just before 5:30 p.m. at a PNC Bank branch in Orange.
Authorities said two sheriff’s office detectives were in the area and spotted the suspect, who had a gun.
"They came upon the suspect, identified themselves as police officers and ordered the suspect who was armed with a handgun to stop,” said Assistant Prosecutor Tom Fennelly.
Fennelly said the suspect ignored the commands of the detectives, and one of the detectives shot him. The shooting took place in a common area near the entrance of the train station in Orange.
The alleged bank robber was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released.
Authorities said they recovered the suspect's weapon and a bag containing cash from the robbery.
