The cause of a fire that damaged an iconic attraction on the Ocean City Boardwalk remains under investigation, and the owners are asking the public for help.
The fire broke out Saturday morning at Playland Castaway Cove. Multiple firefighters responded.
Steve Applegate of Egg Harbor Township witnessed the fire and took a video on his phone.
“When we got here, it was just black, belching smoke and they had it all boarded off,” he says. “Hats off to the first responders. I mean they put their lives on the line.”
A portion of the boardwalk remained closed on Thursday. Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office and ATF were on scene investigating. They are focused on what remains of the arcade, offices and food stand.
The owners of Castaway Cove are asking customers who have been inside the business recently to send them any photos or videos that they may have taken inside. They say that it could help officials figure how the fire started. The files can be sent to playland@boardwalkfun.com.
Castaway Cove withstood Superstorm Sandy. The owners say that they will rebuild and expect to be back in time for the summer season.
