Authorities say a police officer in the Bronx committed suicide Tuesday morning, the eighth NYPD officer to die by suicide this year.

According to authorities, Johnny Rios, 35, who had just gotten engaged, fatally shot himself in the head around 3 a.m. in the Yonkers home he shared with his fiancée and her children.

Rios was a seven-year department veteran temporarily assigned to a detail around Yankee Stadium.

The NYPD is expected to start hiring more counselors, and is urging officers to seek help if needed.

"Think about that what that does to a police officer, and we're supposed to be tough and that's OK,” says NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill. “It comes with the line at work, but where it was the outlet for that? You're not going to go home and talk about it. You're not going to talk to your family about that. We don't live separate lives. You carry that with you all day long whether you're on duty or off duty.”

O'Neill says around 800 members of executive NYPD staff will begin retraining this month with experts on mental health, stress and suicide.

The goal is to eventually train the entire department.
