Six people were hurt and multiple individuals were displaced on Friday evening after the roof of a Newark apartment complex collapsed.
Residents say they heard a
loud explosion that shook nearby buildings at around 6 p.m. and saw the collapse when they came out.
Authorities say 13 people at the Stephen Crane Apartments on South Pine Lane were impacted by the incident. This is a Newark Housing Authority property, according to officials.
Officials say some families displaced families were relocated to a nearby hotel.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was also at the scene.
“This is a traumatic event. I spoke to a few of the residents who have been displaced,” he said. “The city is being fully supportive with the housing authority and trying to make sure that we provide what we can by the way of social workers, counselors and food."
One victim refused medical attention. Five people were hospitalized, according to authorities. One individual is also being treated at the burn hospital of Saint Barnabus for serious injuries.
Officials confirm the collapse resulted from a fire but say they are still investigating the incident.
