A nearly century-old Monmouth County movie theater is officially closing Sunday night because its owners say it simply could not survive 2020.
After 99 years, Atlantic Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands announced its closure Sunday.
In a Facebook post, the owner said, "greedy movie companies, Netflix and COVID-19 were just some of the reasons for the shutdown after being a staple in the Atlantic Highlands community for basically a century."
The owner said the theater was closed since March before reopening in October, and that it had to pay tens of thousands of dollars for insurance, salaries, taxes and maintaining the business - just to name a few factors - with only less than $1,000 coming in.
He says he and his wife were left with no choice but to close.
