Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that damaged three multifamily homes in northern New Jersey.
The blaze broke out around 5 p.m. Tuesday at a home in Paterson and quickly spread to the houses on both sides of it.
Authorities say 34 people had evacuated by the time firefighters arrived. Fire officials say the three buildings are uninhabitable and two others sustained siding damage from the radiant heat.
Fire departments from several nearby towns were called in to help bring the fire under control.
The Red Cross is working to help the displaced residents.
One woman was taken to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Two firefighters were also treated for minor cuts.
The cause of the fire has not yet been released.
