Former President Donald Trump returned to his golf club in Bedminster after the apparent assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania Saturday evening.

The former president arrived overnight at Newark Liberty International Airport where he was seen for the first time since being whisked off the stage at the rally by Secret Service agents.

Trump was campaigning in Butler, Pennsylvania, when authorities say a gunman opened fire. A rally attendee was killed and two others were critically injured.

Trump posted on his social media site, Truth Social, that a bullet pierced the upper right part of his ear. Secret Service killed the gunman and officials say an AR-15-styled weapon was recovered from the roof where shots were fired.

The FBI has identified the shooter as 20-year-old-Thomas Matthew Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

News 12 spoke with Trump's special assistant, Andrew Giuliani, on Sunday.

He said he was with family in the Catskills when he learned of the shooting at the rally. Giuliani said he spoke with the former president.

"I want to keep that private because I know that he has a lot to say to the American people and I want him to be able to say that. He deserves that but I also know that he's thinking about the victim and their family. He's thinking about the two that are critically injured and praying like all of us that they're able to recover," Giuliani said said.

The shooting happened just days before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Trump is expected to be nominated as the Republican candidate for president. Giuliani said it will go as planned in that Trump is focused and ready.

"He's now focused on the RNC, how he can get his message out there and laser-focused on Nov. 5 and how he can help save our limited democracy," Giuliani said. "The president has a very important reveal in the next couple of days. So I, like most Americans, am looking forward to seeing what that final selection ends up looking like and who his running mate is going to be."

Giuliani said he was supposed to spend the day with Trump at the golf club but was instead resting. He is flying to Milwaukee today.
